Can you really “self study” LETHAL self defense skills? By training alone in the comfort of home?
Yes and yes.
It’s SIMPLE, but not EASY. It’s simple now with the internet as you can take a distance learning course on pretty much any subject. This includes how to defend yourself from an attempted rape, homicide, or everyday assault.
All you have to do is sample a good course to see how simple it can be to learn to defend yourself. But you will have to discipline yourself to get off your butt and actually train. Because at the end of the day, no-one but you will know whether or not you actually followed through.
This is why good distance-learning programs are:
1) Push-and-play interactive
2) Offer support via forums and social media so you’re never really “alone”
3) Give plenty of freebies to prove to you their course is even worth your valuable time
For example, check out the MySelfDefenseTraining Network by Damian Ross, a former bouncer and bodyguard with three black belts in Judo, Jujitsu, and Tae Kwon Do. Ross has taken the same training he’s given to Navy Seals, cops, and Secret Service Agents and put them on online video.
Unlike other programs which are a collection of random techniques and DVDs, his lessons are structured to follow the logical progressive format of a well-designed college degree.
Most will want to start with the cheaper, lower division, INTRO self-defense 101-type classes. These are:
You than will move on to 12 upper division courses or modules which cover everything from ground fighting to physical conditioning to weapons.
You than pick your elective courses.
If you have kids, you’ll want to check out Family Safe which teaches you how to keep your children (~13 and under) safe from pedophiles and home invasions. Teenagers should start with 60 Minute Self Defense.
If you own and/or carry a firearm or are thinking about it, you’ll want to check out Guardian Weapon Retention which teaches you how to make sure no criminal scumbag ever rips your gun away from you.

“Ok sounds good but wait, don’t I need to have a training partner to spar with?”
A training partner can either help or hurt your learning, but is not necessary. Back in WW2, allied close quarters combat instructors Colonel Rex Applegate and William E. Fairbairn turned teenage boys (some of them who had never even shaved) into Nazi killing machines and into REAL MEN by having them hit and stab the SH#T out of dummies they made out of sand.
What you do in MySelfDefenseTraining Network courses continues in this same tradition set forth by Applegate and Fairbairn. A tradition equivalent to firearms training. And if you know of a shooting range which actually allows you to shoot real people, please comment and let me know.
“But grand-master (insert funny-sounding Asian name here) says I need to train for 5 years and obtain multiple rainbow-colored belts before i can defend myself.”
Well, he also needs to make a living by keeping you coming back.
“Ok but why can’t I just take Krav Maga classes? They seem like the real deal, they fight dirty, and it’s what the Israeli commandos use.”
First of all, they use guns. Second, simply adding a kick to the balls among a whole bunch of complex motor movements taken from combat SPORTS like Tae Kwon Do and cultural “fighting” (dancing) ARTS like aikido does not make it a true, military-based system.
Again, NO you’re training in commercial Krav Maga, where just like with grand-master sensei, you are forced to sign away your MONEY, TIME, and FREEDOM. The original Krav Maga used as a street fighting system to deal with thugs has been lost to the “Mcdojo Business Model.” Interestingly, Krav Maga’s founder Imi Lichentfield was actually a student of Fairbairn’s methods.
Enough talk. By now, you’re either man (or woman) enough and eager to become a lethal bad-ass student of Damian Ross’s MySelfDefenseTraining Network, or you’re not. And to which I say, thank you.
Because the wolves do need sheep to eat.
Seriously, get on Damian’s mailing list. He gives out more quality self-defense tips FOR FREE than most R.A.D. and TFT instructors give in their classes and seminars.
