Friends, I have a confession to make. I didn’t always train in the SDTS. During my search to find the best self-defense system, I originally jumped on the Krav Maga bandwagon after watching Bas Rutten’s Street Fighting Video that is all over youtube. He talked about how the Krav Maga guys have a weapons defense for just about any situation and how those are the guys who train the special forces, Navy Seals, etc. and I read about how Krav Maga adapts and adds new techniques into their system. So if Bas recommended it, it must be the best right? Wrong.
Accompanying video – I ramble and it’s not as good as this article, but please comment with some positivity, or not haha, like, and subscribe:)
First of all, to be fair, I want to say that Krav Maga will give you a great cardio workout when you attend one of there little McDojos marketed towards all the OC housewives and at LEAST pays LIP SERVICE to the idea of fighting dirty. That’s all the good I have to say about it. Because once you start training in the SDTS, Krav Maga looks CLEAN by comparison. Now, I realize that there are numerous different schools of Krav Maga so I want to reiterate that I am going to be talking about flaws that ALL of them exhibit. Krav Maga is a major, MAJOR violator of Hick’s Law which states that the time it takes for you to react and make a DECISION goes UP with the more OPTIONS or CHOICES that you have. Or to paraphrase what Bruce Lee said, “I do not fear the man that has practiced 1000 different techniques, I fear the man that has practiced one technique 1000 times.”
The MAJOR problem is the use of numerous complex and fine motor skills that MOST people simply will not be able to perform or execute under stress. For more info on what actually happens to the body physiologically under stress and how your heart rate shoots up, your adrenaline dumps, you develop tunnel vision, you guys should check out the book “On Combat” by one of Damian’s good friends, Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman. Anyways while there are SOME gross motor movements in Krav Maga, they don’t differentiate this and you know what I’m talking about, Krav Maga uses specific defenses for specific attacks. I first realized this when I was trying to show a few of the counters to grabs and holds to this girl that I was hitting on, a great conversation topic, by the way. I tried to show her what to do if somebody grabbed her wrist, how to do a wrist lock, AND THAN counter-attack with a SPECIFIC combo of strikes and kicks. “But what if he grabs my throat?” I now showed her another wrist lock, which I now realize was simply a variation of kotegaeshi( found in aikido) followed up by a groin kick plus another set of combos (from what I now realize is simply Taekwondo which is simply repackaged Karate by the Koreans stolen from the Japanese). “But what if he grabs my hair?” You see, for a hair grab you do…all of this is great if you want to keep a conversation going with a pretty girl, but eventually you reach a point where the girl says, “All of this seems so complicated, I’m never going to remember to do all of this?!”
Wrist Lock Nonsense
(Why wouldn’t you just not let him get close enough to grab your wrist in the FIRST PLACE? Why wouldn’t you just HIT him and KEEP HITTING him.)
Exactly. The better question she should have asked, and that I now realize, is HOW did she get into this grab in the first place? Did the attacker magically appear in a puff of smoke? Why was she unable to establish distance, step back, and draw her pepper spray/flashlight? (see my last video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEuX_mYHsXI ) Why was she unable to use TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY to ESCAPE? All of these things Damian goes over in 60 Minute Self Defense and Module 5 of the Self Defense Training System. Look, we humans are the dominant species on this planet for a reason- we’ve utilized TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY to compensate for our lack of STRENGTH, SIZE, and SPEED and that’s what Damian Ross will teach you to do. You CAN’T have a separate defense if he grabs your wrist, a separate defense if he grabs your gun (for you concealed-carry guys), a separate defense if he grabs your throat, a separate defense if he grabs your jacket, a separate defense if he grabs your belt, a separate defense if he grabs you hair, NO! In the SDTS, you attack FIRST!
More Counter Attack Nonsense
(Ok but what if he grabs your wrist and throws a punch?! And, in the dark, how do you know whether that’s a punch or a STAB?!)
What’s even worse about Krav Maga are specific defenses for WEAPONS whereas in the SDTS, it’s all the same. In the SDTS, you are taught how to ESCAPE from these situations and NOT BE THERE in the FIRST PLACE or you’re going to use every ILLEGAL move in the book to KILL your attacker BEFORE he can potentially KILL you. And I’m not talking about simply punching the guy and potentially breaking your knuckles on his head, since WHY would you punch and use a LEGAL move in an ILLEGAL situation?! It’s ridiculously STUPID how the Krav Maga guys use hand wraps during training but aren’t walking around with hand wraps. That’s why in the SDTS, we have you focus on the heel of the hand and the edge of the hand and we make you hit BRICKS and not pads.
Another random pet peeve I have about Krav Maga is the use of knee strikes and kicks that snap back. One of my friends was telling me how he never kicks or uses knee stikes, and when I asked him why he told me how he tried to knee a guy in a fight and ended up slipping and falling since the surface was so slippery. That’s why in the SDTS we teach you to use HEAVY-STOMPING footwork where you knee and STOMP AND STEP FORWARD so you don’t fall on your ass.
In the SDTS, you are going to be hitting first, you can’t wait. It doesn’t matter if he had a knife or even a GUN in his belt if either A) You escape or B) You drive forward and kill him using a combination of your empty-hand combos and your own weapons. Krav Maga’s big point about controlling the weapon is NONSENSE. First of all, if it’s dark, how are you going to be controlling a weapon you can’t even see? Is it a knife, or a gun, or simply a punch? That’s why the Krav Maga knife defense of “bursting” is ridiculous, a real knife attack isn’t going to be one lunge, one stab which you can deflect, it’s going to be a barrage of stabs.
Do you think this (Krav Maga Bursting):
Would work against this (Real Knife Attack)?
Now, even worst, ask yourself honestly do you really think or expect to be able to “control” and grab the knife arm? In the SDTS you are trained to attack using KILLER MOVES and if you get cut, it doesn’t matter, you KEEP GOING until you KILL the MAN that wants to kill you. Honestly, how much power is your attacker going to be able to put behind his thrusts once you CRUSH HIS TRACHEA? That’s why your training in Module 1 and actually being able to INJURE the man with even your bare hands is critical to your survival. Training gun disarms is simply training to wrestle the gun away when ALL of your focus should be focused on KILLING him. Getting stabbed or even SHOT (Cop With Gun VS Criminal) while you are attacking is different than getting stabbed or shot multiple times attempting to “control” and “disarm.” Just because you grab a gun does not mean you have control, if he slips and falls to the ground, you are RIGHT BACK IN THE LINE OF FIRE!
Sounds great in theory (Krav Maga Pistol Disarm)…
What actually happens when you have “control” but are unable to knock the man out or wrench the gun out of his hands (Real Handgun Attack)
Remember Hick’s Law – the time it takes for you to react and make a DECISION goes UP with the more OPTIONS or CHOICES that you have. Or to paraphrase what Bruce Lee said, “I do not fear the man that has practiced 1000 different techniques, I fear the man that has practiced one technique 1000 times.”
Now look, SOME people MAY be able to pull these finite motor movements off. To be fair, William Fairbairn, the grandfather of what we do here with the SDTS, included the SAME SPECIFIC DEFENSES in his books. WHY? Because HE could actually pull them off and that’s what he had used in real fights that he had actually been in. But most people who are NEW to self-defense aren’t able to maintain the composure that is necessary to execute fine-motor skills. I’m sure SOME of the Krav Maga guys who are BOTH superior athletes and are use to being grabbed and seeing punches coming at their heads could in fact PULL OFF SOME of the defenses that they espouse. And if they’re training military, so what, all it takes is to have a studio McDojo near a military base and for them to offer a free seminar, it doesn’t mean there system is the best. Also let’s face it, MOST criminals are not expecting you to fight back so if you do ANYTHING, they’re going to run off and try to find an easier victim since they want to limit their exposure. But what we’re looking for is the ABSOLUTE HIGHEST PROBABILITY of SUCCESS and SURVIVAL. If you’re serious about and you value you and your family’s safety and survival you aren’t satisfied with just ANY self-defense, but you want the BEST self-defense, than you need to be training in the SDTS by Damian Ross.
Keep your eyes peeled for Pt.2, when I do a head-to-head comparison of the SDTS and Tim Larkin’s or really Chris Ranck-Buhr’s Target Focus Training. Spoiler alert :)- The SDTS is still the BEST self defense.
